The Client

The Agastya International Foundation, an educational trust and not-for-profit organisation based out of Bangalore, launched a mobile learning initiative - the Banao Bus which  moved from school to school, introducing students to the principles of Design Thinking and the Maker Movement and encouraging them to leverage these concepts to find innovative solutions to challenges faced by their communities.

The Brief
AIF needed a Teacher’s Handbook and a Student’s Workbook as a part of their learning module. The Teacher’s Handbook was a resource to introduce concepts of design thinking and the maker’s movement to educators. The Student’s Workbook was filled with prompts and activities to encourage lateral thinking in the kids as well as blank pages for them to jot down their thoughts and ideas through the process.
The Thinking
The Thinking

In a world where digitisation and automation are fast out-pacing analogous means of creation, the Banao Bus sought to re-introduce ‘learning through making’ as a powerful means for creative, innovative problem-solving. The design of the books needed to re-emphasise this, and to echo a sense of experimentation and play.

The Visual Approach

The most basic tools for bringing ideas to life - paper and clay - were simulated to give the books a sense of tactility and human-ness. Illustrations, rendered in a playful, whimsical claymation style were littered all through the books. Textures of construction and notebook paper added a further sense of texture to the designs.
